10-Year-Old Boy Found With Gunshot Wound After Collapse At Allentown Ballpark

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- A 10-year-old boy is recovering  after he was struck by a stray bullet while watching a baseball game in Allentown on Saturday. Police think the gun was fired somewhere outside Coca Cola Park, possible as far as two miles away before that bullet hit the boy.

"It was certainly a very odd and bizarre set of circumstances," Lehigh Valley IronPigs' General Manager Kurt Landis said.

He was at the game Saturday night, when about 100 children were on the field for a Harry Potter event before the game.

Then some fans saw the 10-year-old boy collapse in right field and bleeding from behind the knee.

"Unlucky to be at the wrong spot at the wrong time," Landis said.

The boy's parents took him to a nearby hospital, not knowing gunfire was involved.

It was not until an x-ray was done that revealed a bullet was lodged in the boy.

Around the third-inning Landis was informed by police that the bullet likely came from outside the park.

"This is a really freak incident. Once in a billion," he said.

"Does this park here have metal detectors," CBS3's Matt Petrillo asked.

"We do not. We have a security protocol that involves bag checking, trained security officers that know what to look and how to look for things but we do not have metal detectors," Landis answered.

The boy is doing OK but the bullet is still lodged behind his knee.

Allentown Police say the shooting at Coca Cola Park is the 27th in Allentown in the last two months.
