PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police say the body of a missing 2-year-old girl was found in a shallow grave at a park on Tuesday morning in the city’s Ogontz section.
Investigators spent much of the morning working to gather evidence at the crime scene on Ogontz and Olney Avenues in Kemble Park, right across the street from Central High School.
Police say it is a homicide investigation and the caregiver is being considered a suspect.
Police say the caregiver contacted authorities Monday night to report the child had gone missing. Police say she lead investigators to Kemble Park, where they found the girl’s body partially buried in the woods.
It’s unclear how long the child had been missing, but police say the body was not badly decomposed.
“It’s absolutely sad,” said Philadelphia Police Capt. John Ryan. “It’s terrible to see your child meet this kind of end.”
Nearby residents are shocked that this could happen to a child and say something needs to be done.
“I knew something happened. I pray they catch the individual who did this,” said Eursula Jackson.
The identity of the child has not been released. Police say they are working to get in contact with the child’s parents.
