OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) —No way to drain and flooded streets were difficult to navigate in Ocean City on Monday morning. Rain and higher than usual tides caused by strong onshore wind forced water to pond up to several feet in places making numerous streets impassible and daily tasks a soggy mess in shore towns.

John and Dottie Hunt from Lebanon, Pennsylvania enjoyed watching the big waves from a bench on the Ocean City Music Pier.

“We’ve not seen it like this before, we haven’t been down here when there’s been a storm so it’s amazing how rough it is and certainly don’t want to be out in it,” said Dottie.

Steve Pesini and his family from North Wales, Pennsylvania were in town for the week and remain upbeat about having fun.

“Well the first two days was obviously all rain, sun came out so we’re taking advantage of it and hopefully the weather will clear up for a couple days before the next hurricane hits,”Pesini laughs.

In Avalon, a video shared to a Facebook page shows a van halfway covered in water.

“This is probably as bad as I’ve seen it in the last four years that I’ve been here,” said Ocean City resident Dan Armenia. “We’ve probably had over two feet of water… I live on Simpson. I was just in my garage, probably foot of water worth of damage inside. We ended up moving our cars. Last night, about 9:30, I went out to start moving cars, I parked over off of Bay, and as I walk back there was some spots where the water was up over the back of my knees. It was crazy.”

On 96th Street in Stone Harbor, one of the town’s main roads, was also impassable.

Video from an Eyewitness News viewer shows waves crashing into the shoreline in North Wildwood at high tide.

A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect until 2 a.m. on Tuesday.
