Police say 78-year-old Maggie Blackshear was driving her 2014 Hyundai Sonata when she proceeded from North Woodward Avenue, across the westbound lanes of Kirkwood Highway and continued into the eastbound lanes by using a crossover marked For Official Use Only. She then struck a 2006 Ford 500  driven by an 18-year-old Wilmington man traveling eastbound on Kirkwood Highway.

The man's Ford struck a utility pole before coming to rest next to a business. He had to be extricated from his vehicle and was transported to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries.

Blackshear, along with an 81-year-old male passenger, were also transported to Christiana with undisclosed minor injuries.

The accident closed Kirkwood Highway eastbound for nearly two hours.

Blackshear was cited for driving across a median and failure to yield right of way.
