Police: Driver Loses Control, Smashes Into Parked Cars In North Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – One person was injured after police say a driver lost control and hit several parked cars in North Philadelphia on Tuesday.

It happened around 4 p.m. on 9th Street near Lehigh Avenue.

Jose Santiago had just removed the final grocery bag from his truck when the crash occurred.

"I walked inside here and bam everything happened," he tells CBS3.

He says that a black Lexus traveling at an extremely high rate of speed barreled onto their street, striking at least 5 cars before coming to a dramatic and smoke-filled stop.

"My wife's car got hit then he went and hit the truck, the truck went and hit another car, it's crazy," said Santiago.

One witness, who asked not to be identified, ran to the vehicle to try and assist the driver.

"Even though he was out we still talked to him and told him to hold on," the witness recalled.

The driver, who we are told appeared to be a male in his 30s, was pulled from the car by fire crews and rushed to the hospital.

Those who live on the street say they have long been concerned with how fast cars drive down their block.

"We've been fighting for speed bumps some kind of support from the city so we don't have all of this traffic," one resident said.

For Santiago, he is just thankful that the barricade poll in front of his home held his truck back.

"If not it would have landed inside of my porch," Santiago said.

No word yet on how the driver lost control.
