Son Accused Of Killing 49-Year-Old Mother Inside Apartment

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A man is in custody after his mother was found dead in an apartment complex on Wednesday morning in the East Falls section of Philadelphia.

"Just surprised shocked. Like it's just really quiet here," said Alicia Riley, who lives nearby.

Philadelphia Police Capt. John Ryan said officers arrived to the apartment complex on the 5400 block of Wissahickon Avenue shortly after 12 p.m. to perform a well-being check on the 49-year-old Tammie Blunt after family members didn't hear from her for a couple of days.

Ryan says police found Blunt dead from stab wounds and blunt-force trauma inside the apartment.

"Family members had contacted the police. They had not seen Miss. Blunt in a couple of days, or heard from her. Police went to the residence and found her dead from stab wounds and blunt force trauma,' said Ryan.

Police say Blunt was killed on January 22, two days later they found her body inside the apartment and charged her son, 27-year-old Malachi White with her murder. Police are still searching for a motive.

Ryan says White suffers from mental health issues and may have been off his medication.

"He has some mental health issues and our understanding is that he was not taking his medication," said Ryan

The son will be charged with murder and other related charges.
