Local Restaurant Hosts Gingerbread House Workshop

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — One of the tastiest ways to decorate for the holidays is by making a gingerbread house.

Simply sweet and showered in sugar, gingerbread houses will cover tablecloths of Davio's Northern Italian Steakhouse.

In the gingerbread workshop, Sunday is a day filled with candy and creativity, where classically trained pastry chefs like Thomas Heck and Robert Bennett of Classic Cake will be on hand to lend a hand, with finishing touches.

And they are excited to see what you come up with.

"You will get some that want to put M&M'S in perfect rows; you want some Jackson Pollack, you know," Bennett said.

But the pastry chefs have one rule.

It has to be 100 percent edible.

If it could not get any sweeter, all who come are encouraged to bring unwrapped toys for girls and boys of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

"They are learning how to give back right away at the beginning of their lives," Heck said. "It brings joy to my heart. Bobby loves it. He comes every year. He builds these beautiful homes."

All this sweetness lays the delicious foundation for a delightful holiday spirit.
