Maintenance Worker Rescued From Water Tower In New Castle County

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, Del. (CBS) -- Crews in New Castle County rescued a maintenance worker who had fallen in an empty water tower on Wednesday morning.

It happened in the 2900 block of Montchanin Road in Talleyville, around 10 a.m.

Five agencies -- New Castle County EMS, Wilmington Fire Department, Talleyville Fire Company, High Angle Confined Space and Rescue, and Delaware State Police -- responded to the scene.

"There was a staircase that went all the way down inside.. it was a very tight staircase," said Cpl. Jason Walker, with the Delaware State Police Aviation Unit.

The stairs inside were too steep to bring her out by stretcher, so rescuers executed a plan B.

"That was to actually take her up to the roof and then bring her up in the aircraft and take her to an ambulance," said Cpl. Brett Creasy.

After the victim was secured by paramedics inside of the tower Corporal Walker was lowered on top of it and wrapped the woman in what's called a "pep bag".

Then crews  hoisted her from the water tower.

The 59-year-old woman suffered injuries to her head, arm, neck and back and was transported to Wilmington Hospital.

The woman remains in serious condition.
