Police: Gravestones Damaged At Jewish Cemetery In Delaware County Not Act Of Vandalism

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- More than two dozen gravestones were found toppled at a Jewish cemetery in Delaware County.

A woman visiting the gravesite of her father first reported the damage Friday night at Mount Sharon Cemetery in Springfield Township.

About 30 headstones were knocked over or broken.

Authorities said they were not investigating the incident as an act of vandalism. In a statement, police said the gravestones may have been toppled due to several reasons, including weather, age, trees and bush removal. Management will tend to the damage and make necessary repairs.

Earlier this year, dozens of headstones were toppled at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Northeast Philadelphia, and authorities believe vandalism was the cause there.
