Weekend Box Office Report: 'Rogue One' Dominates

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The latest installment of the Star Wars franchise was out of this world at the box office over the weekend.

The first stand-alone spinoff, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, starring Felicity Jones and Diego Luna, earned an estimated $155-million on its weekend debut.

That makes it the runner-up among the opening weekends for Star Wars attractions down through the years.

Meanwhile, second place went to the box office champ of the last three weekends, the animated Moana, which added another $12-million to its coffers.

Third went to the holdover comedy, Office Christmas Party, with $8-million.

And fourth was the debuting Will Smith drama, Collateral Beauty, which took in $7-million.

As for the new musical dramedy, La La Land, with Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, it earned a modest $4-million, good for seventh place.

Overall, industry-wide totals were significantly higher than those of last weekend, but well below those of this weekend a year ago, when Star Wars: The Force Awakens was lighting it up at he box office.
