Snowy, Icy Morning Turns Into Busy Day For Cleanup Crews

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Snow turned into freezing rain Saturday morning in Philadelphia, leaving roads slick and icy.

While it was far from a major storm, it had cleanup crews working all throughout the day.

"Primarily an ice storm, which is always challenging no matter what point in the season it is," says Steve Lorenz with the Philadelphia Streets Department.

He says one of the biggest issues they had to deal with...

"As cars and vehicles were driving through the normal primary and secondary streets they were creating ruts in the snow and ice pack, which was causing some ponding."

But Lorenz says rising temperatures and the 2,500 tons of salt they used mostly fixed that:

"As we threw more salt on it, temperatures rose, all that ponding went into the inlets. Where the inlets are a little bit choked because of some of the snow and ice, with the rising temperatures they should be clearing out."

Lorenz doesn't expect any further problems related to Saturday morning's storm, but if you come across one...

"Folks can call 3-1-1 and we'll dispatch a crew out."

And as for all the salt they used this weekend, he says they still have plenty left, and will be replenishing next week.
