Police: Woman Dies After Being Stabbed Nearly 40 Times By Nephew

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)—A Conshohocken man is facing murder charges after authorities say he killed his aunt--stabbing her nearly 40 times on Friday morning.

The investigation began when authorities responded to a call of a woman screaming and dog barking in the 900 block of Hallowell Street, in Conshohocken.

Police say they forced their way into the residence where they found Catherine Wanamaker, 60, laying on the floor, dead from multiple stab wounds to her body.

According to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office, Wanamaker was stabbed nearly 40 times.

At the scene, police say they also found the victim's nephew, 28-year-old Matthew J. Wertz, standing feet away from Wanamaker, stabbing himself in the throat area.

"This is a terrible tragedy. A woman opened her door to a relative who had just been released from jail, and in return she was brutally murdered," said Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele.

Wertz is being charged with first-degree murder and other related charges.

A preliminary court hearing is scheduled for December 29, 2016.
