City Prepares For New Year's Strut And Fireworks To Welcome 2017

CITY HALL (CBS) -- We are just two weeks away from bidding farewell to 2016 and welcoming a new year. On Friday, Philadelphia officials announced plans for the New Year's Eve celebration and traditional Mummers Parade.

Fireworks will light up the night sky along Penn's Landing again this year, with one show at 6 p.m. & the other at midnight. You can listen to the New Years Eve fun with a synchronize soundtrack right here on KYW Newsradio.

The following day, the Mummers will strut down Broad Street.

"It's unique to Philadelphia," said Mayor Jim Kenney.

Kenney said funding for these traditions can be challenging.

"We have schools and city services to fund, and sometimes things like fireworks seem to be a bit frivolous as far as a city-direct expenditure," the mayor said.

Like previous years, SugarHouse Casino is sponsoring both the fireworks and the parade.

General Manager Wendy Hamilton has announced a contract renewal to host the Mummers parade through 2020, with hopes of adding on the fireworks.

"That's kind of the next up, to decide what the future of the fireworks is, but that is something we love to be involved with," Hamilton said.
