Millions Of Americans Facing Coldest Temperatures Of Season From Arctic Blast

JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. (CBS) -- Millions of Americans are facing the coldest temperatures of the season with wind chills below 0 from the Northern Plains to the Great Lakes as part of New York state could see around two feet of snow Thursday night.

CBS News' DeMarco Morgan reports a lake effect snow storm in Buffalo brought along some rare thunder-snow with it. Strong winds reduced visibility to 0, making driving even more dangerous.

Bruce Roeme, a snow plow operator in Jefferson County, New York, said dealing with lake effect snow can be like playing a never-ending game of catch-up.

Coldest Air Since February Hits The Delaware Valley

"You get your roads cleared up and removed from snow and ice and then another band comes through of heavy lake effect and you're back to square one starting over again," Roeme said.

Another major challenge is impatient drivers on the road.

"People not slowing down," Roeme said. "People will try to pass a plow vehicle and we'll find them in a ditch after they've passed us."

Latest Weather Forecast

Jefferson County Sheriff Lt. Calvin Amann says the unpredictable nature of these storms make them especially dangerous to drivers.

"It's a clear sunny day out. You hit the lake effect snow and the visibility is zero. It'll change just like that," Amann said.

The coldest air since February is hitting the Delaware Valley as highs in the area are only in the 20s. There could be wind gusts in the area up to 40 mph.
