Positively Philadelphia: Philly Holiday Tree

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philly's new holiday tree is both a labor of love and a work of art.

David Korins, who was the designer behind Broadway's "Hamilton," TV's "Grease Live," and has worked with people like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars, designed Philadelphia's tree.

"The base was inspired by the idea of a snow globe. We literally went through thousands of images of the city and hand-traced all of this architecture, you know, cutting out windows and skylines, and architectural details," said Korins.

The base features Philadelphia neighborhoods, the city's history, and major landmarks.

"It's really like a fun 'Where's Waldo?' experience when you walk around, because you get to look at all of the different, fun, and interesting little architectural secrets or details. There's like 30,000 pounds of steel holding this thing up, so there's no cables or anything. I feel like it's held together with this real working class material in the same way the city is held together by that, and it felt like a real opportunity to write a love letter to the city," Korins said.

Korins came back for the official tree lighting at City Hall.

"This city was so unbelievably appreciative of the effort that went into making this. It was the greatest gift I could have gotten. I thought I was giving a gift to the city. They've actually given an incredible gift to me," he said.
