Veterans Remember Pearl Harbor On 75th Anniversary

by Kim Glovas

PHILADLEPHIA (CBS) -- December 7th, 1941 was the day when Japan bombed Pearl harbor in a surprise attack, and which FDR memorialized as "a date that will live in infamy."

A news bulletin interrupted the quiet of a Sunday morning 75 years ago, and pushed the United States into World War II.

Philadelphia has one surviving veteran of that fateful day. But 94-year-old Alex Horanzy of the Northeast is in Hawaii marking the occasion with other fellow veterans.

John Getz, Adjutant Quartermaster of the Veterans of Foreign War Pennsylvania Chapter, says many other Pearl Harbor veterans will be in Harrisburg to remember the date.

"I think every year, no matter what year it is, whether it's the 75th or the 50th or the 25th, it's something we need to look at and understand what happened," said Getz.

On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked first and declared war later. It was the first attack on American soil by any sovereign nation.

More than 2400 US sailors and others were killed at Pearl Harbor. The attack led to the US officially entering World War II.
