Philly Homicide Unit Investigating 'Suspicious Death' Of 2-Year-Old Boy

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Police homicide unit is investigating the "suspicious death" of a 2-year-old boy.

Authorities responded to the 600 block of East Clementine Street in Kensington around 11:51 p.m. for an unresponsive baby.

Police were met out front by a man and woman holding the child.

The baby was rushed to St. Christopher's Hospital and pronounced dead at 2:10 a.m.

Police sources tell CBS 3 the boy's body was covered in bruises and he suffered injuries to his ribs and liver. The boy's mother and her boyfriend are being questioned.

"Anytime you have a death, anyone that's present at the particular time police are notified or that may have been present at any point in time leading up to that, they would be questioned," Lt. John Stanford said. "So that's where we're at right now."

"I was just crying all day because it's sad," said Ebony Brunson, the mother's aunt. "I just want to know what happened. That's all I want to know."

Tashanika Jewett, the boy's godmother, said her godson was a very happy child.

"He always told everybody he loved them and he danced and he was happy," Jewett said. "He was a happy little baby. That was it."

She hopes police will quickly arrest whoever is responsible.

"It's a sad story that nobody wants to see. He was loving. Everybody cared about him," Jewett said.

A police spokesperson said the exact cause of death will come from the medical examiner's office and that could take a few days.
