Americans Can Show Generosity On Giving Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It's the fifth year of the global giving effort known as Giving Tuesday -- and you can make a difference.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping are over. Now it's time to give back -- and Jill Gonzalez, an analyst with WalletHub says Americans are generous.

"We ranked second of the most generous people in the world out of 140-countries last year," she said. So it's definitely up there, about 63 million people last year volunteered with an organization at least once."

Number one percentage-wise -- Myanmar.

Gonzalez says if this is your first time donating pick a group affiliated with a cause you're passionate about.

"That way not only are you giving this year but there's a high volunteer retention rate there, you continue to give because it's something that you care about," she said. "If you are thinking about giving your time, think about your skills you have something specifically that you can offer to a non-profit organization.

And make sure the group spends more on those in need than those in management. That figure can be found online.
