Man Charged With Using Muslim Slurs In Restaurant Attack

BETHEL PARK, Pa. (CBS/AP) — Police say a man was drunk when he used anti-Muslim slurs and physically attacked another man at a restaurant in the Pittsburgh suburbs.

Fifty-four-year-old Jeffrey Burgess, of Bethel Park, faces a preliminary hearing Dec. 1 on charges including ethnic intimidation and simple assault.

Police say Burgess was sitting next to the man inside a Red Robin restaurant when he began insulting the victim then elbowed him repeatedly in the head. Police don't believe the man Burgess allegedly targeted is Muslim, but rather of Indian descent.

In addition to the slurs, police say Burgess told the man "Things are different now," which police believe was a reference to the election of Donald Trump.

The incident allegedly occurred Tuesday evening. Burgess doesn't have a listed phone or an attorney listed in court records.
