PECO Installing More Power Protection To Prepare For Winter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Monday marked another day of howling winds, but for PECO, the power grid is becoming increasingly resilient. You may be surprised to know there are fewer outages on days like Monday.

The power company is installing what are known as "reclosers," or smart switches. Unlike years ago, with a single dedicated line to a neighborhood, The company has invested millions in power delivery through multiple wires and substations.

PECO says customers' power is out for shorter periods of time and less frequently.

Another tool along the grid is the installation of super strong cable that can withstand a heavy tree.
