A Special Gift Under City Hall Christmas Tree

CITY HALL (CBS) -- The Christmas tree at City Hall got its first adornment Thursday, when Mayor Kenney presided over the placing of the first ornament. The 40 foot Pennsylvania grown fir tree stands on the west side of City Hall in Dilworth Park.

To place the first ornament, Mayor Kenney took a ride in a lift bucket wrapped like a present Thursday afternoon. But it's what's under the tree that really grabs your attention.

"The base is 30,000 pounds of pure steel that has been custom-designed and etched through some interesting technology," said Welcome America President and CEO Jeff Guaracino.

Guaracino said it's a visual shout-out to what makes Philly, Philly.

"It represents all of our neighborhoods, both from the icons of Philadelphia including the Love statue, and Rocky and Independence Hall, to our skyline, and to each of our individual neighborhoods, which is represented both by some specific names and then our architecture."

And, just like the vibrant city it represents, Guaracino said, "it will change a multitude of colors. Every time you see it, it will be different."
