Unions Hold 'Get Out The Vote' Rally In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Several unions pulled together for a 'Get Out The Vote' rally in Philadelphia on Saturday, urging members to knock on doors and help get people to the polls on Election Day.

Hundreds dressed in bright orange T-shirts, representing the Laborers International Union of North America, came together to show support for their candidate of choice: Hillary Clinton.

She's for the same thing we are about," said Esteban Vera, a business manager of Laborers Local 57, "fair wages, fair standards, she helps the community."

Local Democratic leaders joined the group, including City Council President Darrell Clarke.

"We need to get out to vote in mass numbers to show people who Philadelphia and Pennsylvania have stepped to the plate," Clarke said, "because we believe in our Constitution and we believe in the rights associated with that Constitution."

With Pennsylvania as a battleground state, Clarke says it's more important than ever to get people to vote.

"There's some notion that somehow we are not going to get out and vote in this community," he said, "and we just wanted to show people we are coming out, we've engaged."

Pennsylvania Attorney General Candidate Josh Shapiro says voters need to speak up.

"We get the government we vote for, the government we deserve," Shapiro said. "If people mobilize, they organize and do the hard work over these next three days, then people like me are going to fight for them over the next three years."

Union members will spend the weekend canvassing neighborhoods with fliers and signs to voters to show up on Tuesday.
