Former US Attorney: Comey Conducted A 'Fake Investigation'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Former United States Attorney Joe DiGenova attacked FBI Director James Comey's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server during her time as Secretary of State.

He says Comey damaged the reputation of the Bureau in the process.

DiGenova assailed Comey during an interview with Chris Stigall on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, accusing him of intentionally sabotaging the first investigation into Clinton's emails that concluded earlier this year.

"When Comey conducted this fake investigation in the front office of the FBI, remember there were no field agents involved in this. This was all done by the suits at headquarters, the original investigation. There were some field agents but not the way you ordinarily conduct an investigation. They started that investigation with the intent of not finding anything. That's why they didn't find Anthony Weiner's laptop. If there had been a grand jury, if there had been subpoenas, if there had been search warrants, if there had been no immunities, they would've found [Former New York Congressman Anthony] Weiner's laptop right away, within the first few days of the original investigation. But they didn't because it was a fake investigation and everybody in that building knew it and that's why he had to send that letter. This is now about him. It's not about Hillary Clinton. It's now about Comey. Comey threw away the integrity of the FBI because he wanted to be a hero. He wanted to be the guy who could say I decided not to prosecute the first female nominee of a major party for president."

He also believes Comey is now losing support from the agents under him inside the FBI.

"He sacrificed the integrity of the agency. He sacrificed its moral authority and he became a joke inside the FBI. The memos and the letters that he is sending to employees would never have been written by any other FBI Director. They are being written because he is on the ropes."

DiGenova also believes this story will continue to be a problem for the Clinton campaign, and will topple one of her most trusted aides.

"This is going to get worse. It's not going to get better. The Weiner laptop is the mother load. There is stuff, the 33,000 that are on there, everything you've ever thought about is on that laptop. It's going to be remarkable. Huma Abedin is going down. She's absolutely lied to the Bureau...These people are weird. Can you imagine what kind of person is married to Anthony Weiner?"
