Police Open Fire On Armed Man In Juniata

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A man is in critical condition this morning after being shot by Philadelphia police last night.

Police were called to a home in Juniata on Elsinore Street near Erie Avenue. Lt. John Stanford says the man's family called because he was trying to commit suicide.

"At that point in time the officers entered the front door of the property. They observed the male sitting in a chair in the kitchen area of the home with a large knife pointed to his chest. (He was) beginning to attempt to stab himself."

The man was tasered. He pulled the taser prongs out of his chest and police tasered him again, and he didn't like that. Eventually officers exited the home, and the man followed them out, still holding on to the large knife.

"Makes his way toward the officers, and at that point, the officers discharge their weapon, striking the male in the torso area of the body."

He was rushed to the hospital and is listed in critical condition.

Internal affairs is investigating.
