Some 9-1-1 Callers In Montco Getting Busy Signal

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) - People in Montgomery County trying to call 9-1-1 from a landline (cell phones are fine) may be having some issues, all because of a severed phone line.

Officials say a contractor doing work in Wayne accidentally cut an underground phone cable, blocking calls from getting through to the county's 9-1-1 center.

"We got a call from one of the nursing homes saying they called and got the busy signal," says Deputy Director for Public Safety in Montgomery County John Corcoran.

He says Verizon notified them of the issue around 2 p.m. Thursday.

"We have not heard of anyone's safety being compromised, and we don't believe that that happened."

Corcoran says anyone who needs 9-1-1 should continue to try until they get through.

Only some landline calls are affected and people are urged to call 9-1-1 from their cell phones.

A spokesman for Verizon says it will take several hours to repair the cables.
