UPPER MILFORD Twp., Pa. (CBS) — A pair of homes were vandalized, with anti-GOP messages in Zionsville, Pa. near the residence of Senator Pat Toomey in Lehigh County, who is currently battling challenger Katie McGinty for his seat.

Pennsylvania State Police say they are investigating after suspects used spray paint to deface the side of two homes near the home of Toomey, over the weekend.

Messages expressing opposition to Toomey and to the Republican party were written on the homes. The messages included “Nazi, Slavers, Rapists, Cross Worshippers = GOP,” “#Americans Against The Republican Party,” and “Look Out Toomey And You Neo Nazi Republicans.”

A statement was issued by Toomey’s campaign, from the senator, which read:

“I am sickened by this disgusting, politically-inspired hatred. It has no place in a civilized society. My neighbors are wonderful people who deserve much better. I hope the cowardly criminals who did this are apprehended and punished.”

On Monday night, Toomey was in Philadelphia taking part in a debate with McGinty. She issued a statement as well, in regards to the vandalism, reading in part:

“This act of vandalism is unacceptable. I hope law enforcement can quickly investigate the matter and hold the people responsible for it accountable.”

Toomey was asked again about the incident, following the debate. “That was really, really appalling,” Toomey said. “There’s no place for any kind of vandalism. There’s no place for that kind of language. I was obviously extremely distressed and disappointed that our neighbors and friends would be subjected to something like that. Absolutely disgusting.”
