PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — A West Chester nonprofit that helps women dealing with breast cancer is hosting its annual fundraiser. They use the money to fill the gap between medicine and wellness.
“Doctors and physicians they have a big job, but at Unite for HER, we treat those women,” says Sue Weldon, founder of Unite for HER. The nonprofit that provides women dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis an opportunity at wellness.
“We introduce them to acupuncture and yoga and massage therapy,” says Weldon, “the type of services that can really make the difference but are not paid for by insurance.”
A 12-year breast cancer survivor, Weldon knows well the pain and side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. She was raising young children while enduring her treatments, which were painful.
“It’s ends up being very debilitating, and it ends up being a lot of anxiety and a lot of stress,” she says.
Weldon says Unite for HER provides free wellness services for 1,000 women every year, but last year they had to turn away 200 women. So this year, they are holding Unite for HER Harvest, a fundraising event that will allow them to raise the money so they do not have to turn any woman away.
“The need keeps growing,” says Weldon. “Our goal is to saturate the area treating more women- – and we don’t want to funds to hold us back.”
Harvest educates attendees on organic foods and natural produce, while offering tasty wines and a celebration. The event takes place at the Phoenixville Foundry on Thursday, October 18th.
