Holiday Food Drive Underway In Burlington County

MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. (CBS) -- The calendar may have Halloween arriving in about a week, but in Burlington County, efforts are on to help the less fortunate through the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

County freeholders have for the last few years held the drive in coordination with local partners, all with the goal of addressing worldwide hunger even if they can only change things at home.

Burlington County spokesman Eric Arpert provided KYW Newsradio with a list of just some of the items, non-perishables for the most part, being sought in a food drive that ends on Friday.

"Canned meals. Mac and cheese. Ravioli. Soup. Tuna. Breakfast bars. Boxed or bagged cereals or noodles or pastas. Or even gift cards for grocery stores."

While the county assists in getting food to those in need year round, this effort is specifically targeted to coincide with World Food Day, an event coordinated through the United Nations that was held on October 16th.

Arpert says the Friday cutoff of this campaign will "put us into donations right up through November. But obviously if there are donations that go beyond that, we partner with all of our local groups that go through the holiday season."

Dropoff boxes have been set up at several locations throughout the county courthouse in Mount Holly as well as the County Library and Resource Conservation Center in Pemberton. Further information is available during the week at 609-265-5706.
