Kenney, Union Officials Call Out Trump For Failing To Keep Promise To Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Mayor Jim Kenney and union officials held a press conference Thursday, claiming Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump failed Philadelphia union workers, businesses, and residents by backing out on a promise to build 'Trump Tower Philadelphia' in the mid-2000's.
The Trump Organization announced plans for the Tower in 2006: a 45-story condo high-rise along the Delaware River, near Sugar House casino.
According to a video posted on YouTube, the building was planned to feature a high-end restaurant, spa, running track, and tennis courts among the list of 'luxury' amenities.
"The Trump Tower is going to create a mark, the likes of which Philadelphia has never seen before," Donald Trump said in the promotional video.
The Tower was to be completed by 2008.
But the project never went forward. Trump Tower Philadelphia filed for bankruptcy a few years later.
"This empty site is another sad example and yet another failed Trump business venture, another Trump phony sales pitch promising future success the magnitude of which the free world has never seen before," Mayor Jim Kenney said.
Kenney, a Clinton-supporter, says Trump halted plans to save his own money.
"I could give you a list of a half-dozen-to-10 developers in the city who continued to do their work through the recession," said Kenney.
The site now has new owners hoping to build townhomes.
KYW has reached out to the Trump Organization, and to the Donald Trump campaign, but hasn't heard back.
