Boomer Between The Games: Week 5 Preview With Chris Simms

By DJ Sixsmith

In Week 4 of the NFL season, Julio Jones reminded everyone why he is a top five wide receiver and the LA Rams proved they are a legitimate threat in the NFC West. This season, NFL fans will be able to hear even more about their favorite teams in a brand new digital show called Boomer Between the Games. Hosted by NFL on CBS analyst and WFAN radio host Boomer Esiason, the former NFL quarterback gives his thoughts on the week that was in the National Football League and chats with an all-star roster of guests about the upcoming week of games.

This week on Boomer Between the Games, former NFL quarterback and Bleacher Report NFL analyst Chris Simms joined the program. Simms threw passes for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tennessee Titans and the Denver Broncos. Chris is also the son of 2x Super Bowl champion Phil Simms and a game analyst for the NFL on CBS.

This week's episode started off with a conversation about Ben Roethlisberger's phenomenal performance against the Kansas City Chiefs. Boomer was extremely impressed with how Big Ben bounced back after a lackluster game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Esiason believes the Steelers have the second most potent offense in football behind the Atlanta Falcons. Meanwhile, Simms loved the way LeVeon Bell ran the ball against a tough Chiefs defense and even went as far as calling Bell the best running back in football.

Additionally, Simms and Esiason took a look back at the wild contest between the Baltimore Ravens and the Oakland Raiders. The Bleacher Report analyst did not like the way the Ravens secondary played in the fourth quarter. Simms noted that the Ravens weaknesses were exposed and he thinks Jack Del Rio deserves a ton of credit for his willingness to roll the dice on offense and his ability to take control of the defense. Michael Crabtree had a season high three touchdowns against the Ravens. Boomer added on to the conversation by commenting on how the Ravens offense mismanaged the clock in the 4th quarter. The former NFL MVP was surprised Joe Flacco couldn't provide an opportunity for kicker Justin Tucker to win the game late.

The biggest storyline heading into Week 5 is the return of New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. The host of Boomer Between the Games says this will be one of the most watched NFL games of the season and he wouldn't be surprised if Brady goes off against the Cleveland Browns weak secondary. Simms had much different feelings about Brady's return. The former NFL QB said it will take Brady a few weeks before he is back in MVP form and even gave some credit to the Browns who are leading the league in rushing yards per game. Simms said Isaiah Crowell and Terrelle Pryor could help Cleveland make this game a lot closer than people think it will be.

Finally, Boomer and Mike grabbed a fan question from Twitter. The two former quarterbacks discussed who is the most underrated signal caller in the NFL this season. Esiason went with Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian and New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Although both guys may not start again this year because of injuries and replacements, Boomer loved the way Garoppolo commanded the Patriots offense and enjoyed how Siemian managed games for Denver. Simms on the other hand went all in on Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr. The Bleacher Report NFL analyst firmly believes Carr deserves to be in the elite quarterback conversation because of the way he's performed on the road and in high-pressure situations. The 25-year-old has nine touchdown passes and just one interception this season.

Boomer Between the Games will be available every week here on CBS Local Sports. Throughout the entire season, Boomer will be joined by guests like CBS Sports Radio's Brian Jones and 2x Super Bowl champ Phil Simms. Former NFL WR Cris Collinsworth will stop by next week to look back at Week 5 and look ahead to the great games in Week 6. Join the conversation with Boomer each week by using #BoomerBTG and one of your tweets could be included in next week's show.
