Peter King: 'The Eagles Will Win The NFC East'

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- When the Eagles beat the Steelers 34-3 to improve to 3-0 a little over one week ago, everyone thought the same thing: This team is forreal.

Peter King of Monday Morning Quarterback attended the game and had the same reaction. And when he was asked by Angelo Cataldi which team will win the NFC East, King didn't hesitate.

"The Eagles are gonna win [the NFC East]," King said on Tuesday's 94WIP Morning Show when. "When I walked away from that game last week, I said it was a master stroke -- first of all -- in bringing Jim Schwartz in to be the coordinator and to highlight guys like Vinny Curry who I think is going to have a real breakout year this year.

"The Philadelphia Eagles have scored 29, 29, and 34 points in their three games so far...they've only allowed 27 points. In every game, they've outscored the opposition collectively this year. This is as much a defensive team right now -- a team that will win with defense -- as a team that will be explosive on offense."

While King admits the Eagles' success has been predicated on the defensive side of the ball, he is in awe of the 23-year-old rookie quarterback Carson Wentz -- of course for what he's doing on the field (769 passing yards, 5 TD's, 0 INT's), but more so for how he approaches things off-the-field.

"There are some people that have a maturity about them and have the ability to compartmentalize the silliness that so much of the NFL is," King said of Wentz. "I told him last week that -- because I saw him after the game and I've had one conversation with him in my life and that was at the scouting combine. It lasted about 20 minutes. And I said to him last Sunday after the game, I said, 'You won't remember this, but three times during that conversation you said to me hey it's just football.' In other words, stop trying to make this bigger than it really is."
