CJC Judges Hire Attorney To Look Into Elevator Safety In Building

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Judges who work at the Criminal Justice Center in Philadelphia have hired an attorney to look into the safety of the elevators in the building after an employee there was injured last month.

Repairs have been made since the August 4th accident. Inspectors have visited the site and deemed the elevators safe to use.

But judges who work there want a second opinion, so they hired Attorney Steven Wigrizer to investigate.

"We have asked for production of all of the inspection reports," he says, "all of the testing reports, so we can review them, and more importantly, review them with our independent elevator engineer."

The elevators transport a lot of weight all day long, but the rush of people every day at 9 a.m. is particularly concerning for the judges.

"We want to make sure that the elevators can safely handle the demand in the morning," says Wigrizer.

A spokesman for Mayor Kenney says safety is of the utmost concern and the only reason the elevators are back in service is because experts have found them to be safe.
