Free Parking Wednesdays Come To An End In Center City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)  -- A free parking perk in Old City Philadelphia is no more.

For a number of years the Philadelphia Parking Authority had offered no meter fees in Old City after 5:00 pm each Wednesday and on the first Friday of each month.

But now that promotion is coming to an end.

Workers in Old City say it's definitely going to affect business.

"I know a lot of people who just come here on Wednesday's because parking is free and they can come and have date night and not spend a lot of money on a $30 parking garage," said Alex, a waitress in Old City. "I really am upset about the no free parking on Wednesdays. That's literally my favorite thing ever.

Sebastian McCall, the owner of Charlies Jeans in Old City, says he's sad to see the program come to an end.

"It's nice for your customer to able to pull in and find a spot and not have to worry about the meter," he said. "It definitely helps, because when I have a customer and they come in at 5 o'clock, they don't have to run out and feed the meter again, so that's great."

The PPA says the took away the parking to increase parking opportunities for those shopping and dining in the city.
