Thousands Take To The Streets For Third Annual Philly 10K

by Tim Jimenez

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An annual run showcasing several city neighborhoods is in the books.

It was a warm summer Sunday morning for the third annual Philly 10K.

Race director Ryan Callahan says it's a run unlike others in the city, because It's all about neighborhoods.

"It's not out in the park, it's not out along the river, it's not on any of the huge, major thoroughfares. We're here on South Street, we're going to be going down Christian and Snyder," Callahan explained.

A 6.2 mile run showcasing places like Queen Village, Passyunk, and Washington Square.

"It's cool running through the Italian Market, and through all the streets, and Passyunk Avenue, and Geno's Steaks. It was fun," said Denise King from Broomall.

The first female to finish, Margaret Vito, loves experiencing the city on foot in a different way.

"It was really fun, cuz my husband and I run through the neighborhoods a lot but you're always dodging cars and traffic so it was cool to be able to run with a clear street," she said.

There were 4500 runners in all this year, and runners finishing up had some treats to look forward to at a big street festival just off South Street.

Ice cold beer, donuts, and other treats.

"Yes, I'm gonna get my custard. Looking forward to that. I earned that," said Robert Guerrero of Philadelphia.
