Crowds Get Taste Of Caribbean At Fairmount Park

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A beautiful summer day brought hundreds of foodies to Fairmount Park Sunday to sample the Caribbean.

Smoke billowed above the brightly colored tents for the 2nd annual Philadelphia Jerk Festival as chefs prepared their spiced meats.

"It gives that nice, smoky flavor which everyone loves," says Alton, who owns Carib Caribbean Restaurant in Upper Darby. "We got curried chicken, curried goat, we got oxtail, we got fried dumplings of course."

Chef Lanelle Edgar is from Jamaica and launched her catering Jammin' Jerk Cuisine three months ago:

"I am making roast fish, I am making ox tail, I am making jerked chicken."

All this was a first for Marjory & Tracey

"I can't wait to get into some jerked chicken and shrimp."

They browsed through vendors selling homemade jewelry and T-shirts:

"We've seen all the nice shirts and hats, and the food is unbelievable."

"It brings all the Caribbean nations together. I am Haitian-Dominican decent, so to be mixing with other people from the West Indies is great."

David and Michelle couldn't wait to dig in:

"We walked around, enjoying the music and getting ready to eat some good food."

"Checking out the venues, and the people selling stuff out here."

They brought their family all the way from Delaware.
