Wine Popping Up In Pennsylvania Grocery Stores
MEDIA, Pa. (CBS) - You can now get your vino at select grocery stores across Pennsylvania, something we haven't seen since prohibition.
"They have wine!" a surprised and delighted Theresea Hightower said.
She was on a beer run with her husband when she noticed rows and rows of reds and whites on display in Delaware County at the Acme in Granite Run.
"Yeah, now one stop shopping...and drinking," she joked. "Two thumbs up for the state!"
Back in June, Governor Wolf signed a bi-partisan liquor reform bill that lifts some of the states more antiquated regulations.
Wine hasn't been sold in grocery stores since prohibition. But it's back now and Acme's Dana Ward says the Granite Run location is the first of many that will be offering it:
"We were actually able to apply for the wine permit as early as August 8th. As long as you had a restaurant permit , which we did in this location, we were able to apply for the extended wine permit. So it was a pretty quick turnaround. And here we are, we're selling wine."
Only one store has been approved in Philadelphia -- a Thriftway in Port Richmond -- but that number is expected to rise dramatically in the months ahead.
Acme started selling wine for the first time in Pennsylvania on Monday afternoon. Store managers say there has been a steady stream of customers.
There are 80 varieties so far, with more to come as they expand.
