DE Baby's First Shoes A Gift From USA Basketball Star Elena Delle Donne

NEWARK, De. (CBS) -- Every baby's first pair of shoes is special, but only a select few in Delaware will be able to say their first pair came from a homegrown, gold medal Olympian.

With a sneaker enthusiast dad like Steve Letnianczyn, little Kingston, just two days old, was destined to have great shoes.

"Kingston is going to have a lot of shoes, I can tell you that," Letnianczyn said.

But Kingston's first pair didn't come from dad. They were a special gift from Delaware Olympian and WNBA basketball star Elena Delle Donne.

"Today, Elena Delle Donne conquered the world. Maybe someday that could be you," the enclosed card read in part.

Because Delle Donne and the U.S. Women's Basketball team took home the gold in Rio, Kingston, and other babies born at Christiana Hospital over the weekend, took home some green Nikes.

"They're called the Waffle 1s," Letnianczyn said.

It was a tribute to the very hospital where Delle Donne was born nearly 27 years ago.

"The story to tell is amazing to me and especially obviously with Elena being from Delaware, I think that we should keep them for him forever," Letnianczyn said.

The sneakers aren't Kingston's only link to an Olympic gold medalist, he also shares an August 21 birthday with Jamaican track and field icon Usain Bolt.

"Hopefully, eventually he'll follow in the footsteps of Elena and get some type of either gold medal or a world record," Letnianczyn said.
