CHESTER, PA (CBS) — Families in Chester, Delaware County get some extra help as they get ready for back-to-school.

On Sunday during the 11th annual Chester community fair and book bag giveaway, kids got some much-needed essentials for the upcoming school year. Blaine Stoddart is with the Better Living Center the organization hosting the giveaway, he said it’s all to get the kids ready for day one.

“We’re giving away 650 book bags, so that children can be prepared for school,” he said.

He said often times people in their community have to choose between putting food on the table and making sure kids have what they need for school.

“We want to make it easier for people so they can educate their children right here in the city of Chester,” he said.

And the kids benefiting from the giveaway say it’s a true blessing.

“It feels great that people want to help out and give stuff to children,” one student said.

During the community fair attendees also got to take part in a healthy cooking class for tips on some after school eats.
