Backpack Giveaway Helps Families Get Jump Start On Back-To-School Shopping

by Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Classes resume in just a couple of weeks, and students and parents are getting into the back to school spirit.

In Germantown, a backpack giveaway is helping low-income families get the year started on the right track.

A few dozen people waited in line to get into the historic Concord School. Jennifer Wilson and her kids tour the 1700s school-house while also putting a dent in their back-to-school shopping list.

"It gives me a jump on the supplies that we need for kids at school, and then I'll go off of the school list and check off and see what else is left. It's a big list and I have three," said Wilson.

Concord School treasurer Michael Schweisheimer helps organize the event.

"We're giving them some supplies, but we're also giving them a lot of energy and excitement. I think it's that recipe of community history and our future that just gets me so excited every year," he said.

This is the 7th annual giveaway, and it's grown from 50 backpacks in year one to 300 this year.
