Bruce Castor Ready To Take AG Helm After Kathleen Kane's Conviction

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Kathleen Kane announced her resignation as Pennsylvania's attorney general on Tuesday, one day after being convicted in her criminal trial. The top prosecutor will step down from her office by the end of the work day on Wednesday.

Attorney General Candidates Speak On Kane Resignation

Former Montgomery County district attorney and commissioner, and Kane's number two, Bruce Castor, announced at a press conference on Tuesday that he will succeed her as attorney general through the election.

A Montgomery County jury convicted Kane on all nine counts of perjury and related charges on Monday. Kane was convicted of deliberately releasing information to get revenge against former Philadelphia state prosecutor Frank Fina. Prosecutors say Kane did it after bad press.

In a news conference, Castor asked a peppering of questions from reporters in Harrisburg and said that he is ready to take the helm until the election.

"Once the jury has spoken, it becomes difficult for any law enforcement officer to have credibility with even the appeal of the criminal conviction of a serious nature ongoing," Castor told reporters on Monday.

Kane was not taken into custody on Monday night and will report to court in Montgomery County on October 24 to learn of her sentence. She could face at least seven years behind bars for her conviction and a possible fine.
