Summer Food Drive Delivers Tons Of Goods To Children In Need
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A summer-long food and book drive has ended with volunteers dropping off the bounty for hundreds of children and adults.
We Never Say Never Community Center was the drop off point Wednesday for two tons of non-perishable items.
"They have a wide selection of things," said the center's Samantha Ryder. "Breakfast, lunch and dinner is in these bags that we give to people."
Ryder says a donation like this helps fill a hunger gap that hits a few weeks before the start of school -- when summer programs that feature lunch come to an end.
"People have cried in here, they're so appreciative of the food," she said. "And it makes us feel good that we can offer that service."
They can offer that service because of the efforts of First Trust Bank employees.
"This is our sixth year doing it," said COO Peggy Leimkuhler. "We collect more every year. Staples, canned goods, pasta, stuff like that.
The food will be distributed right away, while the books will be donated to Children's Crisis Treatment Center and the Center For Literacy.
