Insiders Testify On Day 2 Of The Trial Of PA AG Kathleen Kane

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The trial of Attorney General Kathleen Kane continues in Montgomery County.

Kane is charged with leaking secret grand jury information to get back at a political rival, and then lying under oath to cover it up. Some top aides from her office are being called to the witness stand by the prosecution, as we hear.

Kathleen Kane's former first assistant Bruce Beemer testified he was relieved when a special prosecutor was appointed to investigate alleged leaks from the office of the attorney general.

He says when he read the 2014 newspaper article – which prosecutors say was based on leaks orchestrated by Kane -- it was crystal clear to him that the information had come from the attorney general's office, and it should have been protected by grand jury secrecy laws.

He felt they needed to learn who was behind the leak.

He says he pledged the office's full support to the judge supervising the investigation.

But when Kane asked him to file motions to block the special prosecutor, he says his heart sank.

On cross examination, Kane's attorney asked if the attorney general ever asked Beemer to obstruct the investigation, he said no, he was asked to file paperwork questioning the legality of the appointment.
