NJ State Trooper Rescues Dog Suffering From Heat Stroke In Car; Owner Charged
PILESGROVE, NJ (CBS) – A New Jersey State Trooper is being credited with saving a dog's life after he found the animal inside of a vehicle in distress.
Authorities say on Saturday, August 6, Trooper Frankie Williams was dispatched to the Ranch Hope Thrift Store following the report of a dog inside of a Mercedes-Benz with the window cracked only about one inch.
Police say the trooper saw the dog was lying on its side inside of a crate and was in obvious distress.
Fearing for the dog's safety, police say he decided to break the rear driver's side window with his baton.
Trooper Williams brought the dog to a shaded area, poured water over the dog's body and gave it water to drink.
Authorities then took the dog to Saint Francis Veterinary Center in Woolwich for further treatment.
The vet confirmed the dog was in critical condition and suffering from heat stroke.
The dog's owner, a 43-year-old woman from State College, Pennsylvania, was charged with animal abuse.
Police say the dog was last reported to be in stable condition and will remain with animal control until court proceedings.
NJSP say they are aware people get especially upset regarding animal abuse, which is why they are withholding the owner's name. They ask that people use this incident as a learning tool, and warn that leaving pets unattended with windows rolled up can have deadly consequences.
