Doug Overton Settling In As Lincoln U Head Coach

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Doug Overton is a very familiar name on the Philadelphia basketball scene.

A Dobbins Tech product, he enjoyed an outstanding career at La Salle University, scoring 1,795 points during his four-year career and in 1997 he was inducted into the Big 5 Hall of Fame.

He spent more than a decade playing in the NBA, including time with the 76ers. After he called it a career as a player, Overton turned to coaching, building a resume that includes stints as an assistant at St. Joseph's University and in the NBA with the Brooklyn Nets.

Then in May, Overton was named to run the program at Division II Lincoln University in Chester County, his first college head coaching job.

"It's a very exciting time," Overton tells KYW Newsradio. "Just really, really excited about getting this opportunity to coach at Lincoln University. It's always been a dream of mine to be a head college basketball coach and what better place to do it than the Philadelphia area at a great university such as Lincoln University."

Listen to the entire interview with Lincoln's Doug Overton:

Overton is taking over a Lincoln team that went 9-20 this past season. He talks about what fans can expect to see from his squad out on the floor.
"They way I played, I was a defensive first guy, always got in your face," Overton says. "We'll pick up 94 feet or, like I said before, we'll pick up teams in the parking lot when they get off the bus. We're going to play hard, we're going to be scrappy. We'll play up tempo, but we'll be smart basketball players and unselfish basketball players."

Overton says if there is one thing he wants to make sure he gets across to his players, it is to enjoy the college experience.

"The best times in life are in college," Overton says. "My best friends, Lionel Simmons, Bobby Johnson, Jack Hurd, all those guys I'm still friends with, we had great years at La Salle and I just want these guys to experience that. I really keep it simple and all I keep telling them is, when you go to college for four years, you really want to have a good time. It can set up the next twenty years of your life, you can meet your wife like I did when I was at college and it should be fun."

Overton's first game as Lincoln head coach is set for November 11th against IUP.
