Police: Dog Breaks Glass To Alert Others Of Owner's Medical Emergency

NORTHVALE, NJ (CBS) – Dogs are called man's best friend for a reason.

Police are crediting a dog with saving its owner's life after the resident suffered a medical emergency.

Northvale Police were dispatched to home within the borough just before 8 p.m. Friday night for the report of broken glass and a dog barking loudly.

Authorities say two women called 911 after they heard the glass break and the dog barking.

Officers observed broken glass next to the front door of the residence. Police were unable to make verbal contact with anyone inside the home, so they entered the residence and found someone who had suffered a medical emergency.

They say the resident may have been there for an extended period of time.

Medical personnel were dispatched and the patient was taken to a local hospital.

Police say the dog suffered a very minor injury to its front paw as a result of breaking the window pane.

Authorities believe the dog heard the two women talking, and as they walked past the home the dog broke the glass to get their attention, which led to its owner being rescued.
