PA SPCA Encourages Cat Adoptions By Reducing Fees

by Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Animal shelters across the country waived or reduced fees on cat adoptions Sunday in an effort to clear some space.

The Pennsylvania SPCA is participating in the North Shore Animal League's inaugural Kitten Summer Games to coincide with the Summer Olympics.

SPCA Adoption manager Deanna Schmidt says adult cats are free and kittens are $25 off.

"This time of the year, all the shelters are full with kittens and cats, so we need to try and find them homes as fast as possible so we can save more," she said.

For Olney resident Charles Dicker and his two young daughters, it was love at first bite.

"We've been looking for a little kitty. We finally found one. Her name is Piper. She's 8 weeks old and she's just adorable. The girls love her," said Dicker.

"I like to pet them," chimed in one of his daughters.

The kitten games will be televised on Friday.
