Scott Pelley: Evening News Making A Comeback

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Scott Pelley, the Anchor and Managing Editor of the CBS Evening News, says the network news is making a comeback, reaching more viewers today than at any point in the last five years.

Pelley, in an interview with Rich Zeoli on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT, says viewership is up across the board.

"Something wonderful is happening from my perspective and something I didn't expect. The evening news broadcast, the three main network evening news broadcasts are all growing after years and years and years of decline. At the CBS Evening News, we've added a million and a half viewers in five years. On any given night, we have about seven and a half million viewers. Unfortunately, ABC and NBC are also growing, from my perspective."

He thinks the reason is because consumers trust these traditional mediums to fact check information they see and hear online.

"It's a fascinating thing, in the internet age, with all of these various devices that we can get the news on and traditional television is growing? Rapidly? I wonder, never before in human history has more information been available to more people. That's a great thing. But also, never before in human history has bad information been available to more people. I think folks see and hear things on the internet all day and at the end of the day they wonder is it real? Did that really happen? So, they turn to brand names."
