Paoli Battlefield Is Closer To Being Preserved In History As A National Historic Landmark

CHESTER COUNTY (CBS) -- The Paoli Battlefield in Malvern, Chester County is a step closer to being recognized as a national historic landmark. The Battle of Paoli occurred on September 20, 1777.

Preservationists were able to show the 40-acre battlefield is not only locally significant, but also nationally significant. That was a requirement to move the battleground closer to joining the 25-hundred national historic landmarks.

Bruce Knapp is the President of the Paoli Battlefield Preservation Fund and said they are all about doing their homework.

"And since we're going from a locally significant site up the very top, we had to do a lot of proving and we've done a considerable amount of research that is going to be new information once we make it public, about the battle and its aftermath."

Preservationists are now preparing a presentation that will go through two different review boards. The Battlefield has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1997. The landmark designation would help protect the site and could make it eligible for preservation grants.
