Milkboy Plans A Party For Their 5th Anniversary

By Michael Cerio

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Upstairs and intimate, Milkboy at 11th and Chestnut has become one of the best places to watch music in Philadelphia.

The bar, restaurant, and live-music spot is celebrating five years of bringing top shelf music and food to Center City with a three night party this August 11th - 13th.

The funktastic Fishbone and Mississippi mud-rockers "The Weeks" are just two of the many bands assembled for this anniversary celebration.

"There's a really great scene in Philly, and it's gotten better each year" says Milkboy owner Tommy Joyner. "So this year - for our fifth year - we're really gonna have a blowout".

"We way over spent, just to throw a good party" he adds.

With gourmet burritos and burgers downstairs, Milkboy tops their popular downstairs social scene with an up-close musical experience upstairs.

Unlike so many beloved smaller venues that have fallen over the past five years, Milkboy has stayed strong and flourished. "I just feel like the scene kind of shifts over time from place to place" explains Joyner.

In addition to their place at 11th and Chestnut, Tommy and the people behind Milkboy plan to open another location on South Street before the end of July. They also have a studio, a success long before their Chestnut Street success that has recorded some of the top talent coming out of Philly.

Just as the Milkboy folks show no sign of slowing, neither does the booming music scene in the city. It's one that Tommy Joyner has enjoyed first-hand.

"It's exploding. It's incredible how much music is going on in Philadelphia. People are moving to Philadelphia from other places to be here in this scene, because there's a lot of eyes on this scene" says Joyner. "It hasn't felt like this ever, in my career in Philadelphia, which goes back to 1994 when I opened Milkboy recording. It feels great."

Milkboy's 5th Anniversary Party takes place August 11th - 13th. You can get a full rundown of who is performing at MilkboyPhilly.com. To hear more from Milkboy's Tommy Joyner, check out the full interview below.
