First Phase Of East Market Project Nears Completion

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A former warehouse building on 11th Street near Market Street in Center City is being transformed into a modern warehouse office and retail space.

The Design Center -- a resource for the interior design trade -- will lease 48,000 square feet at 34 South 11th Street.

Gregory Augustine is the owner of the Baer Collection, one of nine independent showrooms. It features fine furniture, lighting, textile and wall coverings.

"The location of this building was so influential to create this new design hub," Augustine said, "and so we are really excited about all of the change and transformation that is happening and really inject some new life and blood into this new design community."

Another occupant, on ground level, is Mom's Organic Market. There will be a vegetarian eatery, gluten-free foods, organic produce and meats, sustainable seafood, and the sustainable new protein -- eatable insects. Free electric car charges will be offered to customers, too.

34 South 11th Street is the first phase of the multi-use $600-million East Market development project, revitalizing an entire city block from Market Street to Chestnut Street, 11th Street to 12th Street.

The building is expected to be ready for business by the end of the year.
